Challenge
Ben Seachin started from a personal need—I wanted raw, selvedge, American-made denim with a custom fit, but nothing on the market felt right. Instead of compromising, I decided to learn how to make jeans from scratch.
As I refined my patterns and perfected my construction I began developing the brand identity, designing logos, and finding ways to tie it all together into something bigger.
From the start, I wanted to incorporate Americana influences without falling into clichés — something unique and honest.
During my research, I came across archival photos of train cars marked with oil-based graffiti tags: tough, utilitarian, and transient. These scrawled signatures and simple, hard-wearing letterforms perfectly reflected the raw denim spirit I wanted to capture, tying the heritage of American craftsmanship to a rough-edged, street-level visual language
Brand Naming
“Ben Searchin” is a nod to a caption used by the late Colossus of Roads, a prolific figure in American graffiti.
When I came across an image of his tag, it immediately clicked — it was the perfect name to represent the brand’s ethos.
Identity Development
Inspired by the monikers scrawled on train cars by traveling hobos — often marked with initials or destinations — the logo conceals a “B” and “S” for Ben Searchin within its form.
The primary wordmark draws from traditional boxcar lettering, echoing its bold and utilitarian graphic language.

Reflection
This project challenged me to be designer, maker, and storyteller all at once. Translating a hands-on process into honest digital content taught me how to build a brand voice rooted in intention. It’s been both a creative outlet and a relief — a space where I have full freedom to share my ideas. This is just the beginning.
